Karun Nair Selected for India A: A Dream Comeback Begins

Karun Nair has moved one step closer to his dream of playing for the Indian senior cricket team again. On Friday, he was selected in the India A squad that will tour England. After delivering strong performances in domestic cricket, Nair now has a golden chance to prove himself once more. If he performs well in England, a return to the national team may not be far away.

Karun Nair first played for India in 2016 and even scored a triple century in Test cricket. But despite this achievement, he couldn’t secure a long-term spot in the team and was eventually dropped. After being left out of the Karnataka team in 2022, he posted an emotional message on social media:
“Dear cricket, give me one more chance.”

Now, two years later, that chance has come. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan remembered Nair’s 2022 message and shared a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter):
“Karun Nair getting selected for India A is a clear indication that ‘Dear cricket’ will give him another chance to play for Team India again.”

Karun, originally from Karnataka, now plays for Vidarbha in domestic cricket. He has been in outstanding form. In the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 779 runs in just 8 matches, including five centuries—four of them in a row—helping Vidarbha reach the final. He continued his great performance in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 863 runs in 9 games. He even hit a century and a half-century in the final, leading Vidarbha to victory against Kerala.

If Nair makes a comeback to the Indian team, it will be one of the most inspiring comeback stories in Indian cricket. Despite averaging 62.33 in six Test matches and scoring a triple century, he was not given enough opportunities and missed out on playing during the 2018 England tour, even though he was in the squad.

India A will play two matches against England Lions before they take on the senior Indian team in preparation for the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
