Cannes 2025 has delivered another proud moment for Indian cinema. Homebound, a powerful drama directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and led by Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, received a thunderous 9-minute standing ovation at its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section. The audience stood, clapped, and celebrated what might just be one of India’s most heartfelt entries in recent years.

And yes, Karan Johar cried. Because when the world claps that long for your country’s story, tears are fair game.

An Emotional Moment for Team India

The film’s premiere turned into a celebration of emotion and national pride. Karan Johar, who co-produced Homebound, was seen tearing up as he embraced director Neeraj Ghaywan. Ishaan Khatter folded his hands in gratitude, and Janhvi Kapoor looked visibly moved. Dharma Productions shared a clip on social media where the audience could be heard cheering loudly. The caption? “9 minutes of pure love & applause!”

For everyday Indians watching from home, it means this: Our stories are no longer waiting for Western validation. They’re owning the room.

What’s Homebound About?

At its core, Homebound is a story about friendship, ambition, and desperation. It follows two friends from a small North Indian village trying to get into the police force, hoping for a life of dignity. But dreams are expensive—and sometimes, friendships crack under pressure. Simple plot. Deep impact.

Adding even more weight, Martin Scorsese serves as Executive Producer. Now, when Scorsese backs an Indian indie? That’s not just crossover—it’s cosmic.

Who Made It Happen?

Besides Karan Johar, the production team includes Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra. Co-producers Marijke deSouza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier helped bring the vision to Cannes. And of course, director Neeraj Ghaywan—of Masaan fame—delivered once again with a story rooted in soil, sweat, and soul.

Cannes 2025 reminds us that Indian stories told with honesty can move the world. No over-the-top drama, no exotic lens—just raw, local truth. And the applause? That’s proof it worked.

As the Homebound team stood under the Cannes lights, overwhelmed by love and applause, it wasn’t just a film premiere. It was a loud, global round of applause for authentic Indian storytelling.
