US President Donald Trump has once again stirred the pot in the ongoing trade battle with China. After a recent court ruling that limited his power to impose tariffs, Trump accused China of breaking a trade deal made just weeks ago.
The court had said Trump went too far by imposing broad tariffs on foreign goods. Despite this, Trump got temporary approval to keep collecting tariffs under emergency powers while the legal fight continues.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to share his side of the story with his usual flair. He said his steep tariffs—some over 100%—had nearly crippled China’s economy. According to Trump, many Chinese factories shut down, and there was “civil unrest.”
He claimed he struck a “FAST DEAL” to save China from economic collapse. Trump said he did this not for the US, but because he didn’t want to see China’s situation get worse. But now, he says, China has “TOTALLY VIOLATED” that agreement. His message was clear: “So much for being Mr. Nice Guy!”
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted that trade talks are stuck and suggested Trump might need to speak directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping to resolve the tariff issues.
The US and China had agreed earlier this month to pause tariffs for 90 days—a surprising move in their fierce trade war. But China’s foreign ministry says it has repeatedly made its position clear on the tariffs, showing no signs of backing down.
Trump has been shaking up US trade policy since returning to the White House in January. He uses tariffs to pressure countries into better trade deals. But this approach has also caused market jitters and supply chain problems worldwide.
The appeals court gave the White House 10 days to stop the tariffs affected by its ruling. For now, Trump has a temporary win, but the battle is far from over.
