Thieves broke into the Mangoli branch of Canara Bank and stole 59 kilograms of gold, a senior police officer said on Monday. The gold belonged to people who had taken loans from the bank, said Vijayapura Superintendent of Police Laxman B Nimbargi.

The police were informed after bank officials realized that 59 kg of gold was missing. The bank manager filed a complaint on May 26. The bank was locked on the evening of May 23 and was closed on May 24 and 25 for the weekend.
On May 26, when the peon came to clean the bank, he saw that the locks on the shutters were cut. The police were immediately called.
After checking, police found that thieves had entered the bank and stolen the gold. The gold was kept in the bank as collateral for gold loans.
Police have formed eight teams to investigate the case.
They believe the theft happened during the night of May 24 to May 25.
The police said they are working on the case and will catch the thieves soon.
