The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Kerala is set to receive very heavy rain this week. As of Tuesday, orange alerts have been issued in 15 districts over the next three days — two on Thursday, four on Friday, and nine on Saturday. Yellow alerts are also in place across 29 districts on different days.
Orange alert means rain between 11 cm and 20 cm, which can flood roads, uproot trees, and knock out power. Add wind speeds of up to 60 kmph by Saturday, and things are looking rough, especially in the northern districts.

Here’s what the IMD has outlined:
- Tuesday & Wednesday: Yellow alerts in 9 districts
- Thursday: Orange in 2 districts, yellow in 8
- Friday: Orange in 4 districts, yellow in 7
- Saturday: Orange in 9 districts, yellow in 5
And that’s just rainfall. Winds will likely speed up from 30-40 kmph early in the week to 50-60 kmph by Saturday. That’s not breeze-that-flips-your-hair wind — it’s more like umbrella-snapping, hoarding-flying wind.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak rain hours, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow updates from local authorities. Emergency services are likely on standby — but prevention is better than boat rides through city streets.
