Aamir Khan is getting ready to return to the big screen with his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, which releases on June 20, 2025. But before that, fans may remember his 2016 hit Dangal, which became one of the biggest successes in Indian cinema. The film was loved worldwide, but it was never released in Pakistan—and now Aamir has explained why.

Why ‘Dangal’ Wasn’t Released in Pakistan

In a recent interview on Aap Ki Adalat, Aamir revealed that Pakistan’s censor board had asked to remove scenes showing the Indian flag and the national anthem. These scenes were part of the moment when wrestler Geeta Phogat wins a match for India in the film.

Since Disney was one of the producers, they were concerned that not releasing the movie in Pakistan might affect profits. But Aamir didn’t hesitate.

“Within a second, I said no. I won’t release the film in Pakistan if they ask me to remove our national flag and anthem,” Aamir said.

He made it clear that he wouldn’t compromise on such important national symbols, even if it meant losing money.

‘Dangal’ Was Still a Big Hit

Even without a Pakistan release, Dangal became a massive hit worldwide. It earned over ₹2070 crore globally, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
