Shubman Gill had a dream start as India’s new Test captain, scoring a brilliant 147 runs in the first match against England at Headingley, Leeds. This was his first Test century as captain and came at an important time, helping India take control early in the five-match series.
Gill looked like he might score a double century, but he got out while trying a big shot. He tried to hit England spinner Shoaib Bashir over mid-wicket, but the ball hit the inside of his bat and was caught by Josh Tongue at deep square leg. He wanted to reach 150 in style but mistimed the shot.
As he walked off the field, the whole stadium stood and applauded. His teammates and fans cheered loudly, and photographers captured the emotional moment — Gill raised his bat with tears in his eyes, proud of his career-best performance.

Gill became captain after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket just before this England tour. Now, leading a young Indian team, Gill is hoping to achieve something big — India hasn’t won a Test series in England since 2007 under Rahul Dravid. Before that, India had memorable wins in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar and in 1986 under Kapil Dev.
With his calm leadership and strong emotions, Gill’s fantastic 147 could be the start of a new and exciting chapter for Indian Test cricket.
