Dermatologist Warns: Skipping Sunscreen in Monsoon Is a Major Skin Mistake —Here’s Why?

Many people think sunscreen is only needed in the summer. But that’s not true! Even during the rainy season, your skin still needs protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Dr. Trupti N. Desale, a skin doctor from Niti Skin and Hair Clinic in Nashik, explains that it’s not the heat but the UV rays that damage our skin – and these rays are present all year round, even when it’s cloudy or raining.

Here Are 3 Reasons Why You Should Use Sunscreen in the Monsoon:

1. UV Rays Can Pass Through Clouds
Just because it’s cloudy doesn’t mean you’re safe. Up to 90% of UV rays can pass through clouds and reach your skin. UVA rays, in particular, can cause skin aging and dark spots. Sometimes, clouds can even reflect more UV rays onto your skin. So yes, your skin can still get sunburned even when the sun isn’t shining brightly.

2. Humid Weather Doesn’t Protect You
Monsoon weather is humid, and people often skip sunscreen thinking their skin is too oily. But humidity does not block UV rays. In fact, it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Also, when you sweat, your sunscreen can wear off quickly, making it less effective. That’s why reapplying sunscreen every few hours is important.

3. Skipping Sunscreen Can Harm Your Skin in the Long Run
Not using sunscreen regularly can lead to dull skin, uneven tone, early wrinkles, and dark spots. Over time, the sun’s UV rays can even cause serious skin problems like skin cancer. Using sunscreen daily helps keep your skin healthy and glowing.

Monsoon Sunscreen Tips:

  • Choose gel-based or matte sunscreens – they feel light and are perfect for sticky weather.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Reapply every 2–3 hours, especially if you’ve been outside or sweating.
  • Don’t forget often-missed areas like ears, neck, hands, feet, and even the private areas if they’re exposed.
