Red Alert in Srirangapatna: Tourist Entry and Riverbank Rituals Banned Due to Flood Risk

The Srirangapatna taluk administration has temporarily banned tourist visits and religious rituals along the banks of the Cauvery River due to the risk of floods.

Officials said that heavy rainfall in the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagar) Reservoir catchment area has caused the water level to rise close to its maximum capacity. As a result, authorities may release 30,000 to 50,000 cusecs of surplus water from the dam — possibly even more depending on the situation. Because of this, the public is being strongly advised to stay away from the riverbanks.

According to a new order issued by Tahsildar Parashurama Sattigeri, from 6 AM on Wednesday, entry is banned until further notice to several popular spots in Srirangapatna including:

  • Karekura
  • Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
  • Wellesley Bridge
  • Bathing ghat in Srirangapatna
  • Nimishambha Temple
  • Sangam
  • Ghosai Ghat
  • Paschima Vahini

In addition, religious rituals like immersion of ashes, offering pinda (rice balls) to ancestors, and other post-death rituals are also banned at Paschima Vahini, Sangam, Ghosai Ghat, GB Hole, and other riverbank areas.

This decision is aimed at ensuring public safety and avoiding any accidents near the overflowing river. Authorities have requested full cooperation from locals and tourists during this precautionary period.
