Kolkata Gangrape Case

A shocking turn in the Kolkata ‘gangrape’ case has come to light. CCTV footage now shows a law student being dragged into her college by two men. This video supports her complaint filed with the police on 26 June.

The 24-year-old woman is a law student at South Calcutta Law College. According to her, the main accused, Monojit Mishra, asked two other men to take her to the college guard room on 25 June. Mishra is a former Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader.

The Video Shows the Truth

NDTV reported that the CCTV footage clearly shows the victim, the three accused, and even the security guard. A senior police officer told the media:

“The CCTV footage confirms the woman’s allegations. We are examining it closely.”

According to her statement, the woman was not only dragged into the college but also beaten with a hockey stick, filmed, and then blackmailed. Police believe she was raped after she refused Mishra’s proposal for marriage.

The Accused and Their Background

The three men involved in this case are:

  • Monojit Mishra – reportedly has multiple past cases against him.
  • Zaib Ahmed
  • Pramit Mukhopadhyay

All three are now in police custody till 1 July. The police have also reconstructed the crime scene and taken the victim’s full statement. South Suburban Division Deputy Commissioner Bidisha Kalita confirmed these actions.

Political Tension Grows

This case comes shortly after the RG Kar hospital rape-murder that caused political outrage in West Bengal.

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee made a controversial comment:

“If a friend rapes a friend, how can you ensure security? Will there be police in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)?”

TMC MLA Madan Mitra also blamed the victim:

“This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed, don’t go; nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this incident wouldn’t have happened.”

These remarks were widely criticised. MP Mahua Moitra responded sharply, saying:

“Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them.”

TMC Distances Itself

After the incident, the Trinamool Congress has clearly distanced itself from Mishra. The party says they do not support such people and action should be taken.

This case has created a huge wave across Bengal. Many are asking: How safe are our students, even inside their colleges?
