Abu Dhabi’s population is expected to grow to 5.4 million by 2040, and while that might sound like a recipe for traffic chaos, experts say there’s no need to worry. Thanks to smart planning, the city may actually stay less congested than many others around the world.
Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, explained to reporters that Abu Dhabi has done a great job planning for future growth. In fact, Abu Dhabi was ranked as one of the least traffic-congested cities globally. In 2023, drivers there spent only 19 hours in traffic all year, compared to 71 hours in Dubai.
How Abu Dhabi Is Keeping Traffic Under Control
Edelmann said that Abu Dhabi’s success comes from smart urban planning. The city is growing its roads and using advanced technology to manage traffic better. One key tool they’re using is artificial intelligence (AI).
By running AI simulations, city planners can predict how new housing and roads will affect traffic. This helps them plan better so traffic doesn’t become a problem in the future.
Focus on Public Transport
People in the UAE are also looking for more mass transport options, like trains and metro systems, instead of just relying on cars and buses. While Abu Dhabi doesn’t have a metro yet, there have been discussions about introducing rail services to add more options for commuters.
This matches the UAE’s bigger goal to reduce car use and invest in greener, more efficient public transport.

Abu Dhabi vs. Other Emirates
Unlike places like Dubai or Sharjah, which often face traffic jams, Abu Dhabi stands out as a city with smooth traffic and safe roads. Edelmann says the city has shown it knows how to handle growth and will continue to do so.
He concluded by saying that Abu Dhabi’s transport authorities have a solid plan and are doing a great job preparing for the future.
