Can This End Gaza’s 22-Month Nightmare? Hamas in Ceasefire Talks with Palestinian Factions

For the people of Gaza, peace has become a broken promise.

Now, Hamas says it’s consulting with Palestinian factions to decide on a new ceasefire deal. The group received a fresh proposal from mediators and is expected to announce a final decision soon.

This comes as Israel’s war on Gaza enters its 22nd month — a stretch of time filled with death, destruction, and displacement.

Is This the Final Chance for Peace?

A source close to Hamas told Reuters that the group wants strong guarantees this new US-backed ceasefire will actually stop the war — not just hit pause.

They fear Israel could use the ceasefire to reload and then strike again, just like what happened earlier this year. Back in March, a previous 60-day truce ended in chaos when Israeli airstrikes killed over 400 Palestinians in just one night.

That strike pushed the war into what the UN called “the cruellest phase of a cruel war.”

Trump’s Push and Global Pressure

US President Donald Trump, now back in the spotlight, said he expects Hamas to respond within 24 hours. He claims Israel has accepted the deal and is ready for another 60-day ceasefire.

But Trump’s involvement isn’t without controversy. His earlier plan to put Gaza under US control was slammed worldwide, with many calling it ethnic cleansing.

Still, this time he says he wants “safety for the people of Gaza.” Whether that happens remains to be seen.

The Human Cost: A War Without End?

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed over 57,000 Palestinians. More than 130,000 have been wounded. Around 85% of Gaza is under Israeli military control, according to the UN.

Hospitals, schools, and entire towns have been destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced — not once, but multiple times.

The war started when Hamas launched an attack in southern Israel that killed around 1,139 people. Since then, Gaza has been burning.

Now, Hamas must decide: Will this proposal lead to real peace, or is it just another temporary break in a never-ending war?

The people of Gaza are watching. The world is waiting. And for once, maybe, a decision made in smoke-filled rooms could actually stop the fire outside.
