If you’re traveling to or from Kuwait, you now need to declare any cash, gold, or expensive items worth more than KWD 3,000 (around $9,820 USD) at Kuwait International Airport.

Who Must Follow This Rule?

  • Everyone – Kuwaiti citizens, expats, and visitors.
  • The rule applies when arriving or leaving the country.

What You Must Declare:

If the total value is over KWD 3,000, you must declare the following:

  • Cash (in any currency)
  • Checks or bearer instruments
  • Gold bars, coins, and jewelry
  • Luxury watches
  • Expensive electronics like phones, tablets, and laptops
  • Branded fashion items such as designer handbags

Even worn jewelry must be declared. Items must be packed in your hand luggage.

What Documents You Need:

To avoid trouble, carry:

  • Original purchase receipts
  • Customs declaration forms
  • Proof of ownership (if available)

Customs officers may ask to see these. If you don’t have them, your items could be taken.

What Happens If You Don’t Follow the Rule?

  • Items may be seized on the spot
  • You could be detained and questioned
  • Legal action might be taken if smuggling or false information is suspected

There are no exceptions, even for tourists.

Why This Rule Was Introduced:

The rule helps Kuwait:

  • Prevent smuggling
  • Keep track of financial activity
  • Improve border security
  • Follow international customs standards set by groups like the World Customs Organization (WCO) and Financial Action Task Force (FATF)

Advice for Travelers:

  • If you’re carrying cash, gold, or valuables over KWD 3,000, fill out the customs declaration form before going through customs.
  • For help or more details, visit the official Kuwait Customs website or contact the airport before your trip.
