IND vs ENG Test: Why Ishan Kishan Can’t Replace Injured Rishabh Pant

There was talk that Ishan Kishan could replace Rishabh Pant in the fifth Test match against England. But it turns out, he can’t — because he’s injured too.

According to reports, Ishan Kishan has suffered an ankle injury after falling from a scooty. He had ten stitches on his left foot, and although the stitches have been removed, his ankle is still in a plaster. A source revealed that the selectors did contact Ishan, but only recently, and he is not fit to play.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant, who got injured on Day 1 of the Manchester Test while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, has also been ruled out for 6–8 weeks. He broke his foot and will now undergo a long rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Even though Pant was seen wearing a medical boot and won’t do any wicket-keeping for the rest of the match, BCCI confirmed in a statement that he will still be available to bat if needed. Dhruv Jurel will take over as the wicket-keeper for the rest of the game.

Ishan Kishan, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand, was considered a perfect replacement for Pant. He had recently performed well playing for Nottinghamshire, scoring 87 and 77 in matches against Yorkshire and Somerset.

However, with both Pant and Kishan injured, India will now rely on backup options like Dhruv Jurel for the ongoing Test.
