India is all set to face England in the final and deciding Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval starting this Saturday. All eyes will be on India’s young captain, Shubman Gill, not just for his leadership but also because he’s just 32 runs away from reaching a major milestone – 6,000 international runs across all formats.
Gill’s Performance So Far
At just 25 years old, Shubman Gill has already scored 5,968 runs in 112 matches for India, with an impressive average of 46.62 and a strike rate of 79.92. He has hit 18 centuries and 25 half-centuries, with his highest score being 269 runs.
In the current Test series against England, Gill has been in fantastic form, scoring 722 runs in 8 innings at an average of 90.25. He is the top run-scorer of the series and has scored four centuries, including a brilliant 103 in tough conditions during the fourth Test.
Joining Legends: Bradman and Gavaskar
Gill has now joined an elite list of cricket legends. He became only the third captain in Test history to score four centuries in a single series, joining the great Don Bradman (1947-48 vs India) and Sunil Gavaskar (1978-79 vs West Indies).
Even more impressive, Gill is the first-ever captain to hit four centuries in his debut Test series as captain, breaking the previous record of three, which was shared by Bradman, Greg Chappell, Virat Kohli, Steven Smith, and Warwick Armstrong.
His century at Old Trafford also broke a 35-year wait for an Indian century at the venue. The last Indian to score a hundred there was Sachin Tendulkar in 1990, when he scored 119.
A Rising Star
In the World Test Championship era, Gill’s nine Test centuries in just 67 innings matches the record of Rohit Sharma, who took 69 innings to reach the same number – showing just how fast Gill is rising as one of India’s top all-format players.
As the final Test begins, Shubman Gill will not only lead the team but also have a shot at writing another golden chapter in his already remarkable journey.
