Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China and Japan starting around August 29, according to news.
This visit to China will be PM Modi’s first since 2019, and it comes after strained relations between India and China following the Galwan Valley clash in 2020, where soldiers from both sides lost their lives. This incident had seriously affected the relationship between the two countries.
Now, both countries are trying to improve their ties, and this visit is seen as an important step in that direction.
SCO Summit in China
PM Modi is likely to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which will be held in Tianjin, China, on August 31 and September 1.
Leaders from other member countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, are also expected to attend.
There is also a strong possibility that PM Modi may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit. The last time they met was during the BRICS Summit in Russia in October 2024.
In preparation for this visit, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met with President Xi during an SCO meeting in China and spoke about developments in India-China relations.
Talks to Improve Ties
To improve relations, both countries have restarted important talks, including the Special Representatives (SR) Dialogue. This decision was made during a short meeting between PM Modi and President Xi at another summit in Kazan, Russia last year.
Another sign of improving ties is the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been suspended for almost five years.
Visit to Japan First
Before visiting China, PM Modi will travel to Japan, where he is expected to hold annual summit talks with the Japanese Prime Minister.
This will be PM Modi’s first visit to Japan since May 2023, when he attended the G7 Summit in Hiroshima.
