The trade fight just got real. China is not staying silent after US President Donald Trump warned of new tariffs on countries supporting BRICS. On Monday, China hit back hard, calling the move “coercion” and saying trade wars only create losers.
At a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “We always oppose the use of tariffs as a tool to pressure others. There are no winners in a trade war.”

That’s China’s way of saying: we’re not playing your game.
BRICS: Not Anti-America, Just Pro-Cooperation
Let’s get something straight. BRICS is not a gang against America. It’s a group of rising economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa — later joined by countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and Iran.
Their aim? To build a stronger Global South. To reduce dependence on the US dollar. To have a bigger voice in global decisions.
So when Trump said any country “aligning with the anti-American policies” of BRICS will face a 10% tariff — China and others saw that as a threat to fair global trade.
Why China Is Pushing Back
China believes cooperation, not confrontation, is the way forward. Here’s why China says tariffs are a bad idea:
- They hurt everyone. Tariffs raise prices. Consumers pay more.
- They break supply chains. Businesses get nervous. Plans change.
- They start trade wars. One country imposes tariffs, others hit back.
- They ruin trust. Countries stop working together.
Mao Ning also said BRICS “does not target any third party” and stands for “inclusiveness and win-win cooperation.” In short: stop seeing enemies where there are none.
India is part of BRICS. So yes, we could be hit by these tariffs too. But here’s the thing — India must act smart.
We need to protect our interests, grow our economy, and stand strong with countries that share our goals. Aligning with BRICS doesn’t mean being anti-anyone. It means being pro-India.
And let’s not forget — a stronger BRICS helps all developing nations get a seat at the big table.
What Happens Next?
Will Trump really slap that 10% tariff on BRICS countries? Or is this just political noise?
Whatever happens, one thing is clear:
China is not backing down.
And as the world watches, countries like India must make bold, clear choices. Not out of fear — but out of pride and purpose.
