Tamil Nadu Train Crash

Tamil Nadu Train Crash – A normal Tuesday morning turned into a nightmare.

Around 7:45 am, a school van carrying young students was hit by the Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai passenger train at a railway-level crossing in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district. Two children lost their lives. Six others are in the hospital, some of them critically injured.

The van was completely crushed in the collision.

This accident happened at a “non-interlocked manned gate” between Cuddalore and Alappakkam. This means the gate had no automatic safety systems. But there was a gatekeeper. According to railway officials, while the gatekeeper was closing the gate, the van driver insisted on crossing.

The van was allowed to pass. It should not have been.

And now, two innocent lives are gone.

Gatekeeper Suspended, Blame Shared

The railway has suspended the gatekeeper. A committee from the safety, operations, and engineering departments is investigating the full cause of the accident.

A statement from Indian Railways said, “The driver insisted on crossing even as the gatekeeper was closing the gate. That decision led to the tragedy.”

But who really is to blame? The gatekeeper? The driver? Or the system that still allows manual gates without full safeguards?

Anger and Questions in Tamil Nadu

This is not the first time a school van has been involved in such an accident. Locals in Tamil Nadu are furious. They are demanding proper railway safety checks, especially at crossings used by school children every day.

How many more lives must be lost before we fix this?

This was not a remote village. This was not a freak accident. This was preventable. A gatekeeper was there. A train schedule was known. Children were inside that van.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced Rs 5 lakh for the families of the two children who died. Students with serious injuries will receive Rs 2.5 lakh each.
