At Least 19 Dead and Over 100 Injured After Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crashes Into School Premises in Uttara, Dhaka

A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school in Uttara, Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 100 others.

The jet, a Chinese-made F-7 BGI, crashed into the premises of Milestone School and College around 1:06 PM, while classes were ongoing. The aircraft had taken off for a routine training flight, but something went wrong, and it crashed near the school gate, causing a large explosion and fire.

Videos from the scene showed smoke and flames coming from the school building as emergency responders, including the military and fire services, rushed to help.

 

Many of the people who died were young students. A spokesperson from the school said a class was in session very close to the crash site. Rescue teams were seen pulling out the injured and taking them to hospitals.

The Bangladesh Army confirmed the jet belonged to the Air Force but did not provide details on the cause of the crash or if the pilot managed to eject safely.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his condolences on social media. He said he was deeply saddened by the loss of young lives and offered India’s full support to Bangladesh.

An investigation has been started to find out what caused the crash.
