Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: A Small Land Dispute in Ghaziabad Delays 200-km Highway Project

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is almost ready, but one small issue is delaying its opening — a 1,600 square meter plot in Mandola, Ghaziabad.

This land has a two-story house built by Veersen Saroha, who refused to sell the plot to the Uttar Pradesh Housing Board back in 1998. At that time, the board was buying land for a housing project and offered around Rs 1,100 per square meter. While most people agreed, Saroha did not. He took the matter to court, and the project was put on hold.

Later, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took over the land from the housing board for the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway project. But Saroha’s family is still fighting the land acquisition in court. After Veersen Saroha passed away, his grandson Lakshyaveer continued the legal battle.

An NHAI official said, “Work has been delayed because the house owner and his family have filed a case in the Supreme Court.” The court sent the case to the Lucknow High Court, which will hear it on April 16.

This land is part of a key section between Akshardham in Delhi and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. This stretch is very important, as it can reduce travel time between Delhi and Baghpat to less than 30 minutes.

The Supreme Court has asked for quick action because the 212-km Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is nearly complete. The opening of the entire expressway depends on the resolution of this land dispute in Ghaziabad.
