On Kargil Vijay Diwas, India remembered its heroes in Dras, Ladakh. But this year, the day also marked a big shift in the Indian Army’s future.
Speaking at the ceremony, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi made a powerful announcement. He revealed the launch of “Rudra” all-arms brigades. This is a big step in making the Indian Army stronger and more modern.

What is ‘Rudra’?
The Rudra brigades are a new type of combat unit. Earlier, Indian Army brigades had one main type of fighting unit—like infantry or artillery. But Rudra is different. It combines many units into one brigade.
Rudra will include:
- Infantry
- Mechanised Infantry
- Armoured units
- Artillery
- Special Forces
- Drone and unmanned systems
- Combat support and logistics
This makes each Rudra brigade ready for any kind of battle. Two brigades have already been turned into Rudra units. More will follow.

Building a Future-Ready Army
General Dwivedi said, “Today’s Army is not just facing current threats. We are also preparing for the future.”
Along with Rudra, new ‘Bhairav’ Light Commando Battalions are also being added. These are fast and deadly special units meant to shock the enemy at the border.
Other upgrades include:
- Drone Platoons in every infantry battalion
- Loitering Munition Batteries and Divyastra Batteries for artillery
- Indigenous missile systems for Air Defence
It’s clear the Indian Army is changing fast and for the better.
Operation Sindoor: A Message to Pakistan
The Army Chief also spoke about Operation Sindoor. It was launched after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent people.
He said Indian forces gave a strong reply. Terror bases were hit with precision strikes. The operation was a success. The message was simple: Terrorism will not be allowed.
Why This Matters
This year’s Kargil Vijay Diwas is more than just a memory. It’s a moment of pride and power. India is not only honouring its martyrs, but also getting ready for the next fight.
The new Rudra brigades show that the Indian Army is moving with the times. It is faster, smarter, and stronger.
As General Dwivedi said: “Those who support terrorism will not escape anymore.”
