Australia and Britain have signed a 50-year AUKUS submarine partnership treaty. This new deal is all about building and running nuclear-powered submarines together. It’s a major move in global defence, and it sends a clear message to the Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement was signed in Geelong, Victoria. Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles met with UK Defence Secretary John Healey to seal the deal.

This partnership is part of the AUKUS pact, signed in 2021 between Australia, the UK, and the US. The goal? To help Australia get its first fleet of nuclear-powered attack submarines from the next decade. It’s a long-term plan, but a powerful one.
Why This Treaty Matters
The AUKUS submarine partnership treaty will help Australia and Britain work closely. They will team up to design, build, and take care of these submarines. It also covers how they’ll eventually dispose of them safely.
This isn’t just a paper deal. Britain expects it will bring in up to £20 billion (₹2.3 lakh crore) in exports over 25 years. Australia is already spending big. The total AUKUS plan will cost Australia A$368 billion over 30 years.
Just this month, Australia paid the US A$800 million as part of the second instalment under the AUKUS agreement. That shows they’re serious about this.

Training for the Future
While the deal was being signed, over 40,000 troops from 19 countries were training in Australia. The Talisman Sabre war games are running from July 13 to August 4. It’s the biggest joint military training in the country.
This year, Britain sent more forces than ever before. The UK’s HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier is also taking part. It’s a clear sign that both nations are stepping up.
The Bigger Picture
This 50-year AUKUS submarine partnership treaty isn’t just about defence. It’s about trust, tech sharing, and future-proofing Australia’s military.
Yes, the US is still reviewing its role under AUKUS. But Australia says it’s confident the pact will go ahead. This new UK-Australia treaty proves that at least two partners are ready to move forward.
What Comes Next?
Now that the treaty is signed, both countries will focus on building the new SSN-AUKUS submarines. These are not nuclear-armed, but they will be nuclear-powered, which means they can stay underwater longer and travel farther.
This is Australia’s biggest defence project ever. And it’s more than just weapons—it’s about sending a message: Australia is ready to defend its place in the Indo-Pacific.
