The Indian government is planning to take over Bitra Island, one of the 10 inhabited islands in Lakshadweep, for defence and national security purposes. Bitra is home to around 105 families, and many locals are strongly opposing this move.

The Lakshadweep revenue department issued a notice on July 11 saying a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) will be done before the land is transferred. The government claims the island’s strategic location is important for national security.

MP Opposes Move, Promises to Support Islanders

Lakshadweep MP Hamdullah Sayeed criticized the decision and said it would disrupt peace in the region. In a video message, he assured the people of Bitra that they are not alone.

“We had a meeting with local leaders and discussed this issue. We will support Bitra islanders both politically and legally,” he said.

The MP also said the government already has enough land in other islands for defence needs. He questioned why Bitra — where indigenous people have lived for decades — was being targeted without looking for other options.

He also pointed out that the administration did not consult the islanders before making this decision.

What the Notification Says

According to the government notice, the SIA is being done as per the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013. It mentions that all stakeholders, including gram sabhas, will be consulted.

However, the notice also says that the consent of gram sabhas or landowners is not mandatory. The SIA survey must be completed within two months from the date of the notification.
