OpenAI just signed a major deal with the U.S. Defense Department, worth up to $200 million. The one-year contract is aimed at developing next-gen AI tools to support national security missions and modernize military operations.

Announced Monday, this is OpenAI’s first public contract with the Pentagon. The move comes after months of strategic shifts, including a collaboration with defense tech startup Anduril, which itself received a $100 million contract late last year.

This latest win is part of OpenAI’s new push into the public sector. In a fresh initiative called OpenAI for Government, the company will deliver custom AI solutions to help U.S. agencies manage national security, streamline admin systems, and improve defense-related services like health care and cyber operations.

“We’re proud to engage in national security,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in April, during a discussion with OpenAI board member and former NSA chief Paul Nakasone.

What’s in the Contract?

According to the Department of Defense, OpenAI will prototype frontier AI capabilities that tackle major national security problems—from warfighting strategies to enterprise tech upgrades.

These tools will also be used to enhance how the military handles data—from acquisition and program reviews to health services for soldiers and their families.

The contract will be handled through OpenAI Public Sector LLC, and most of the work will take place in the National Capital Region, covering Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland and Virginia.

Importantly, the DoD emphasized that all AI usage must follow OpenAI’s safety policies.

The Bigger Picture: AI + Defense

This isn’t just about OpenAI. Rival AI labs like Anthropic are also stepping into defense, teaming up with Palantir and Amazon Web Services to supply AI models to U.S. intel and military units.

In April, Microsoft, OpenAI’s cloud partner, announced that the Azure OpenAI service is now cleared to handle classified information for the U.S. government.

And earlier this year, Altman stood next to President Trump to announce the $500 billion Stargate project—a massive AI infrastructure expansion in the U.S.

With more than $10 billion in annual revenue and a recent $40 billion funding round, OpenAI is moving fast—and not quietly.

Why This Matters

AI is no longer just a Silicon Valley toy. It’s now at the heart of global power and military readiness.

By landing this $200 million deal, OpenAI is now a serious player in the defense world. It’s not just about smart chatbots anymore—it’s about cyber defense, military ops, and shaping the future of war and peace.
