A tragic accident in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay has left at least 34 people dead and several others missing after a tourist boat overturned during a sudden thunderstorm on Saturday.
According to reports, the boat was carrying more than 50 people, including 48 tourists and 5 crew members. Many of the passengers were families visiting from Hanoi, and over 20 children were on board.

The accident happened when strong winds and heavy rain suddenly hit the boat, causing it to flip over in the water. So far, 12 people have been rescued, and 18 bodies have been recovered by border guards. A 14-year-old boy was found alive after being trapped inside the boat for four hours.
Rescue operations continued late into the night, as many people are still missing. The exact number of missing passengers is not yet confirmed, but authorities fear that dozens may have been swept away by the storm.
Ha Long Bay is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful green waters and limestone islands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors every year.
This isn’t the first time weather has caused problems in the area. In 2023, Typhoon Yagi hit the region, sinking around 30 boats in Quang Ninh province, where Ha Long Bay is located. Sudden weather changes are common there, especially during the monsoon season, and they continue to be a danger to tourist boats.
