After more than 100 years, the old Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram is getting a modern replacement! Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially open the New Pamban Bridge on Sunday in Tamil Nadu. This new bridge is India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge and is located in the Ramanathapuram district, connecting Rameswaram Island with Mandapam on the mainland.
Why Is the New Pamban Bridge Special?
- It Can Lift Up!
The bridge has a section that can rise up to 17 metres in just 5 minutes. This allows ships to pass underneath easily, without stopping train traffic for long. - Better and Faster Travel
Trains can now travel at speeds up to 80 km/h across the bridge, making the journey smoother and quicker. - Long and Strong
The new bridge is 2.07 kilometres long and built to last 100 years. It’s designed for two railway tracks, but currently operates with one.

How Was It Built?
- Built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of around Rs 550 crore.
- It is 3 metres higher than the old bridge to provide more space for sea traffic.
- Engineers used special anti-rust materials, stainless steel, and protective coatings to make it strong in salty sea air.
- The main lift span (72.5 metres long) was assembled using advanced technology with help from IIT Madras.
- Welding checks were done using PAUT (Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing) to ensure safety and strength.
A Bridge to Be Proud Of
- The New Pamban Bridge is being compared to world-famous bridges like:
- Golden Gate Bridge (USA)
- Tower Bridge (UK)
- Oresund Bridge (Denmark–Sweden)

A Glimpse Into the Past
- The original Pamban Bridge was built by the British in 1914.
- It had a manually operated lifting section to let ships pass.
- That bridge has now been closed for safety reasons, making way for this modern marvel.
The New Pamban Bridge is not just a piece of infrastructure — it’s a symbol of India’s engineering progress and a big boost to connectivity in the region.
