The US House of Representatives has taken a big step toward passing President Donald Trump’s major domestic policy bill, often called the “big, beautiful bill.” Early Thursday, Republican leaders managed to win over some of their own party members who were against the bill, allowing it to move forward.

What Is the Bill About?

The bill includes several of Trump’s key goals:

Trulli
  • More money for the military
  • Funding for a large deportation program for undocumented immigrants
  • Extending tax cuts from Trump’s first term
  • New work rules for people getting Medicaid and food assistance
  • Reductions in Medicaid spending (the biggest since it started in the 1960s)

However, it could increase the national deficit by $3.4 trillion over 10 years.

How Did It Pass?

Republican Speaker Mike Johnson got just enough support to bring the bill up for debate. The House voted 219 to 213 to move forward. At first, five Republicans voted “no,” but four of them changed their minds, helping the bill continue.

The Senate had already passed the bill, but with some changes, so it came back to the House for final approval.

What Happens Next?

The bill is now being debated in the House. After the debate, there will be a final vote. If it passes, the bill becomes law.

Why Are Democrats Opposed?

Democratic leaders strongly oppose the bill. They believe:

  • The cuts to Medicaid will hurt poor families, seniors, and veterans.
  • New work rules for Medicaid and food assistance are unfair.
  • The bill gives big tax breaks to the rich while only small cuts for low- and middle-income people.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said all Democrats will vote against it and only need a few Republicans to join them to block the bill.

Tax Cuts Explained

According to a study by the Tax Policy Center:

  • The poorest Americans would get about $150 in tax cuts.
  • Middle-income Americans would get $1,750.
  • The richest group would save around $10,950.
