Supreme Court Acts After Cash Found in Judge’s Home – Corruption in the Judiciary?

Shocking Discovery: Cash Found in Delhi High Court Judge’s Home

In a startling turn of events, a large amount of unaccounted cash was discovered in the official bungalow of Justice Yashwant Verma of the Delhi High Court. This discovery has led to his transfer back to Allahabad and sparked a serious debate about corruption within the judiciary.

The Incident Unfolds

Last week, during the Holi vacation, a fire broke out in Justice Verma’s official residence. While the judge was not in the city at the time, his family members called emergency services. Upon arrival, the emergency responders discovered the cash and alerted the police. The news quickly traveled through official channels, reaching the Supreme Court Collegium.

Swift Action by the Collegium

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, took a very serious view of the matter. The five-member Collegium unanimously decided to transfer Justice Verma back to Allahabad. Some members of the Collegium even suggested stricter actions, including asking Justice Verma to resign or initiating an internal inquiry.

The Process of Removing a Judge

In 1999, the Supreme Court established guidelines for dealing with allegations of corruption and misconduct among judges. According to these guidelines, the Chief Justice can form an internal committee to investigate the matter. If the committee finds the allegations to be of a grave nature, the judge may be asked to resign. If the judge refuses, the Chief Justice can recommend removal by Parliament under Article 124(4) of the Constitution.

Calls for Judicial Reform

Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has urged the Supreme Court to review the appointment process for judges. He emphasized that corruption within the judiciary is a serious issue that has been ongoing for years. Sibal called for a more transparent and careful appointment process to restore public trust in the judiciary.

Conclusion

This incident emphasizes the need for greater transparency and accountability in the judiciary. The Supreme Court is taking steps to address the issue, but its impact on future judicial appointments and the fight against corruption remains uncertain.
