First Ball, First Wicket! MI’s Rare IPL Feat Achieved by Just 4 Bowlers

Imagine making your IPL debut and taking a wicket with your very first ball—these four bowlers did just that for Mumbai Indians!

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen many unforgettable debuts, but few are as thrilling as taking a wicket on the very first delivery. For Mumbai Indians (MI), four bowlers have achieved this rare feat, with left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar being the latest to join this elite list.

1. Ali Murtaza: The Trailblazer (2010)

The first to do it for MI was Ali Murtaza in 2010. Playing against Rajasthan Royals, he dismissed Naman Ojha with his first ball. Though he gave away 46 runs in four overs, his early breakthrough set the tone for MI’s narrow four-run victory.

2. Alzarri Joseph: The Record-Breaker (2019)

Next came Alzarri Joseph in 2019, who didn’t just take a wicket on his first ball—he destroyed Sunrisers Hyderabad with a record 6/12! His victim? The dangerous David Warner. Joseph’s spell remains the best by a debutant in IPL history.

3. Dewald Brevis: The Part-Time Surprise (2022)

In 2022, part-time spinner Dewald Brevis shocked everyone by dismissing Virat Kohli on his first ball. Though RCB won the match, Brevis’s three-ball spell became a talking point.

4. Ashwani Kumar: The New Sensation (2025)

The newest member is Ashwani Kumar, who made headlines in 2025 by sending KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane packing on his first delivery. His 4/24 helped MI crush KKR by eight wickets, marking one of the best debuts by an Indian in IPL history.

These four bowlers prove that a dream start is possible—even in the high-pressure world of the IPL. Who will be next to join this exclusive club?
