India-Turkey Relations: Risks, Costs & Geopolitical Impact

The relationship between India and Turkey has become complicated in recent years. Although they once had friendly diplomatic ties, tensions have risen mainly because Turkey supports Pakistan on sensitive issues like Kashmir.

India views this as interference in its internal matters. The key reasons for these tensions include Turkey’s criticism of India’s actions in Kashmir, its growing closeness with Pakistan especially in military areas, and Turkey’s assertive foreign policy under President Erdogan, which often conflicts with India’s interests.

Economically, rising tensions could harm trade and business between the two countries. Even though trade isn’t very large compared to India’s total trade, problems like higher taxes, less investment, and delays in joint projects could hurt companies on both sides. Politically, worsening relations may lead to less cooperation in international forums, new alliances that oppose each other, and potential diplomatic isolation.

This cycle of mistrust is harmful because India values positive global relationships. On a wider scale, tensions between India and Turkey could increase conflicts in Asia, shift power balances, and create new security challenges, all of which could destabilize the region. For India, maintaining peace in its neighborhood is crucial for growth and security, so any conflict that disrupts this peace needs to be handled carefully. Overall, it is important for both India and Turkey to find ways to engage in dialogue and respect each other’s views to avoid costly consequences and keep stability in the region.
