Down But Not Out: Gujarat Titans’ Last Hope for a Top-Two Finish!

IPL 2025: How Gujarat Titans Can Still Finish in Top Two

Gujarat Titans (GT), who are currently at the top of the IPL 2025 points table, faced their fourth defeat of the season on Thursday. They lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This was GT’s second loss to LSG this season. The only other teams to beat GT this year are Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Even with this loss, GT, led by Shubman Gill, still sits on top of the table with 18 points. Their strong performance in earlier matches helped them stay ahead. However, this defeat has made their chances of finishing in the top two a bit tricky.

Why Finishing in the Top Two is Important

All four playoff spots are already confirmed, but finishing in the top two is still a big deal. It gives teams the advantage of playing in Qualifier 1, which offers a second chance to reach the final if they lose the first match.

What GT Needs to Do

GT has only one league match left — against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, May 25, at their home ground. If GT wins this match, they’ll move to 20 points, which would almost confirm their top-two spot.

However, there’s a catch:
RCB and PBKS both have 17 points from 12 matches. If either team wins both of their remaining games, they’ll reach 21 points and could go above GT.

Here’s the breakdown:

GT must beat CSK to reach 20 points.
GT needs either RCB or PBKS to lose one match, so they stay at a maximum of 19 points.

Remaining Matches:

  • RCB plays against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) — both are out of the tournament but still competitive.
  • PBKS faces Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) — MI will be trying hard to win and spoil PBKS’s chances.

If both RCB and PBKS win all their matches, GT could fall to third place, even with 20 points.
