Eye Stroke Warning: Ozempic May Be Linked to Rare Vision Problem..

If you’re using Ozempic or Wegovy to manage type 2 diabetes or to lose weight, there’s a new warning you should know about. Doctors are now talking about a rare but serious eye problem that could be connected to these medicines. And yes, it could affect your vision in a big way.

The condition is called NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy), but it’s often called an “eye stroke.” This happens when the blood flow to your optic nerve suddenly drops, damaging the nerve and leading to vision loss—usually in one eye, and often without any warning.

What’s the link?

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has added NAION to the list of very rare side effects of semaglutide, the main ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy. It affects about 1 in 10,000 people. That’s rare, but not impossible—especially for people with other health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

Why does it happen?

Experts aren’t 100% sure yet, but they think that rapid changes in blood sugar—which these medications can cause—might disrupt the blood flow to the optic nerve. When the blood flow is reduced, it can lead to this type of vision loss.

Watch out for these signs:

  • Sudden loss of vision in one eye
  • Blurry or dim vision
  • A dark spot or “hole” in the center of your vision

If any of these symptoms show up suddenly, don’t ignore them. Get medical help right away. Acting fast could help protect your vision.

Should you be scared?

Not really. This side effect is very rare, and Ozempic/Wegovy help many people manage serious health issues. But if you already have other health risks, it’s smart to talk to your doctor. Don’t panic—just be aware.

Your eyes are important, and even rare risks shouldn’t be ignored. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and get it checked.

Your vision matters—stay informed and stay safe.
