Shubman Gill’s Captaincy Test Begins: Can He Replicate Graeme Smith’s Heroics?

India is entering a new era in cricket, as 25-year-old Shubman Gill will lead the Indian Test team for the first time in a five-match series against England starting June 20. Gill has been made captain after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket.

Gill is now the fifth-youngest Test captain for India. His first big challenge is playing and leading in England, which is considered one of the toughest places for visiting teams.

Learning from Graeme Smith

Gill’s situation is similar to what Graeme Smith faced back in 2003. Smith became the South African captain at just 22 years old after their poor performance in the World Cup. His second series as captain was in England, and many doubted his leadership.

But Smith proved everyone wrong by scoring a double century in the first Test in Birmingham, and another in the second Test at Lord’s, helping South Africa win that match. He led with confidence and performed with the bat when it mattered most. In the end, the series ended 2-2, and Smith was named Player of the Series for scoring 714 runs in nine innings.

Can Gill Do the Same?

Like Smith, Gill has also received criticism. Some people think he is too young and not experienced enough, especially since he hasn’t done well in overseas Test matches. Except for his great start in Australia in 2020-21, Gill has struggled outside Asia.

In 13 Tests outside Asia, he has scored 559 runs at an average of 25.40, with just two fifties, both from 2021. His overall Test average is 35.05, with five centuries and seven fifties in 32 matches.

Managing Senior Players

Leading a team is not just about scoring runs. Gill will also need to handle senior players like Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul, who have led India before. This could be tricky, but again, Smith faced a similar challenge with players like Kallis, Kirsten, Gibbs, and Pollock and still managed to bring the team together.

Gill will need to find the right balance between being a strong leader and being friendly and respectful with his teammates.

A New Journey Begins

Shubman Gill’s captaincy marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket. It won’t be easy, and he will be tested both mentally and physically. But just like Graeme Smith, if Gill stays focused and learns from past greats, he could guide India to new heights.

When he walks out for the toss in the first Test at Headingley, all eyes will be on him. At just 25, Gill has a lot to prove—and this series could define his journey as a leader.
