rape case

In a chilling case from Kolkata, a rape case has rocked South Calcutta Law College. A first-year law student was allegedly raped inside the college campus on June 15. Four people have now been arrested — including a security guard, two students, and a former student turned lawyer.

The survivor, a 24-year-old student, has accused Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student and now a practising lawyer, along with Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). Mishra is also known to be linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing. The fourth arrest came on Saturday — Pinaki Banerjee, the 55-year-old security guard of the college.

How the Incident Unfolded

The law student said the attack happened just after a student wing meeting. Around 7:30 pm, she was cornered by the three accused. Two of them forced her into a room with the third man, who tried to rape her.

“I begged him to let me go. I even touched his feet. But he didn’t stop,” her statement reads. She had a panic attack during the assault and asked for an inhaler. But instead of helping, they dragged her to the security guard’s room and threw the guard out.

There, she was brutally assaulted again, even hit with a hockey stick. The men allegedly threatened to kill her family and boyfriend if she spoke up.

Survivor Speaks Up

For hours, she kept quiet out of fear. But the next day, she filed a complaint. “I want justice. I am a law student, but today I am a victim. I won’t stay silent,” she said.

This brave decision led to the arrest of all four accused. Kolkata Police acted swiftly after the FIR, confirming the rape case and launching a full investigation.

Political Firestorm

This rape case has triggered a political storm in Bengal. BJP leaders have released photos of Mishra with top TMC figures, accusing the party of shielding criminals.

Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition, has called for state-wide protests. Meanwhile, the TMC student wing has distanced itself from Mishra. “He’s not part of any active committee now. He must face justice,” said TMC youth leader Trinakur Bhattacharya.

Despite disowning Mishra, the party is under fire for its silence and alleged inaction. The college also faces questions about how such a horrific act happened on its campus.

Justice Must Be Swift

This case is a reminder of the RG Kar rape case from last year — another dark moment in Bengal’s student politics. People are demanding swift action and tough punishment.

The law student showed incredible courage by speaking up. Now it’s time for the system to respond just as bravely.
