Warren Buffett, one of the world’s richest people, has donated $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares to charity. This is his largest donation since he started giving away his fortune in 2006.

Buffett gave:

  • 9.43 million shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • 943,384 shares to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation
  • 660,366 shares each to three charities run by his children:
    • Howard G. Buffett Foundation
    • Sherwood Foundation
    • NoVo Foundation

Total Donations So Far

With this latest donation, Buffett has donated over $60 billion in total.

Buffett’s Net Worth

Before this donation, Buffett’s net worth was estimated at $152 billion, ranking him 5th richest in the world. After the donation, he is expected to drop to 6th place.

Even after giving away billions, Buffett still owns 13.8% of Berkshire Hathaway, the company he has led since 1965.

What His Family Charities Support

  • Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation: Focuses on reproductive health.
  • Sherwood Foundation: Helps local charities in Nebraska and supports early childhood education.
  • Howard G. Buffett Foundation: Works on fighting global hunger, stopping human trafficking, and solving conflicts.
  • NoVo Foundation: Supports girls, women, and indigenous communities.

Buffett’s Future Giving Plans

At age 94, Buffett has said he will not sell any Berkshire shares. He has updated his will to donate 99.5% of his remaining wealth to a charitable trust after his death. His three children will manage the trust and must agree on how to distribute the money within 10 years. However, Buffett said the Gates Foundation will not receive donations after his death.
