Kolkata Gangrape Case: Planned Assault by Trio With Disturbing History of Student Harassment; Says Police

Kolkata gangrape

The Kolkata gangrape case that shocked the city is not just a one-time incident. According to the police, it was a planned assault by three men with a known history of harassing female students.

The crime took place on the evening of June 25, at South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area. A female student was allegedly gangraped by three individuals—one a former student, and two current ones. A fourth person, the college’s security guard, is also under arrest.

Trio Had a History of Harassment

Police say this was not their first act. The accused—Monojit Mishra, Pratim Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed—had been known for troubling and harassing other female students in the past. But what’s worse is how they operated.

They would record videos of their abuse on their mobile phones. Then, they used those clips to blackmail the victims into silence.

“It was premeditated. The plan was made days in advance,” said a senior officer of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the case.

The victim, police revealed, was targeted right from the first day she got admission to the college. This wasn’t random. It was a calculated move by the trio.

Hunt for Videos and Evidence

The SIT has now started a search for mobile footage related to the incident. Police raided the homes of Mukherjee and Ahmed on Sunday. Investigators are trying to find if videos of the June 25 assault were shared with others.

If they find that clips were sent to groups or individuals, those people will also face action. This part of the investigation is still on.

Over 25 students present on the college campus that evening are also being questioned.

A Broken System?

The bigger question remains: How did these men operate so freely in an educational space? Why weren’t past complaints taken seriously? And how did a place of learning become a trap for such abuse?

If the SIT finds more victims or videos, this case could open a floodgate of horror. It’s no longer just about one incident. It’s about the culture of silence and fear inside institutions that are supposed to protect students.

A Call for Justice

This is not the time for society to look away. This is the time to speak up. Every student deserves a safe place to study. If proven guilty, the accused must face the harshest punishment.
