Kolkata student rape

A Kolkata student rape case has shocked the city once again, just months after a similar tragedy in a state-run hospital. The victim, a 24-year-old law student, said she suffered a panic attack before she was raped by three men.

The survivor said she was on her college campus on June 25 for a meeting. As she was about to leave, an alumnus named Monojit Mishra asked her to stay back. She trusted him — a big mistake. Soon, he allegedly started forcing himself on her.

“I said no. I pushed him away and told him I had a boyfriend. I cried and begged him to stop,” she wrote in her complaint.

The stress gave her a panic attack. She couldn’t breathe and asked to be taken to a hospital. Instead, one of the accused, Zaib Ahmed, was told to buy her an inhaler. After she took a puff, she tried to leave. But the main gate was locked. The guard didn’t help.

She was dragged to another room by Zaib and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. She even touched Monojit’s feet, begging to be let go. But they took her to the guard’s room, made the guard sit outside, and locked the door.

Monojit Mishra raped her. The others reportedly filmed the assault. She said Monojit later showed her videos of the attack to blackmail her into silence. “He said he’d kill my boyfriend and arrest my parents if I told anyone,” she said.

At one point, he even tried to hit her with a hockey stick. She said she pretended to be dead. After the assault, he warned her to stay quiet. She called her father and left the college.

The CCTV footage supports her story. It shows her being dragged inside. Local reporters also found the pharmacy where Zaib bought the inhaler. Staff confirmed the purchase at the exact time mentioned.

This is not the first time such horror has hit Bengal. In 2024, a doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. Now, the same questions return: Are students safe on campus?

The state is watching. The country is watching.
