Monojit Mishra

For years, students at a top law college in the city lived in fear of Monojit Mishra, also known as “Mango.” Now, after a brutal rape incident on June 25, his dark past is finally being exposed.

Monojit Mishra was no longer a student. He had graduated, but returned as a contractual staff member. His presence on campus created an atmosphere of fear, especially among female students. One student, speaking to NDTV on condition of anonymity, said, “We were scared to attend classes. He used to click our pictures, morph them, and send them around on WhatsApp.”

A History of Violence and No Action Taken

This was not the first time Monojit was accused of sexual harassment. In 2019, he allegedly tore a girl’s clothes on campus. In 2024, he beat up a security guard and damaged college property. He was even named in a theft case. Despite several FIRs, no action was taken.

Even after repeated complaints, Monojit Mishra roamed free. The college did nothing. The police did nothing.

The June 25 Incident: Horror on Campus

That fear turned into tragedy on June 25. A 24-year-old law student accused Monojit Mishra of raping her on the college campus. Two others, Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Zaib Ahmed, allegedly recorded the act to blackmail her.

All three have now been arrested. But many are asking — Why did it take this long?

Even his parents had given up on him. His father, a priest at Kalighat temple, and his ailing mother reportedly cut ties with him due to his behavior.

Students Want Real Change

Students are now demanding strict action, not just against Monojit, but against all who protected him. They want colleges to be safe, not silenced by fear.

“I don’t think there’s any girl in this college who wasn’t harassed by him,” said the student.

This is not just about one man. It’s about a system that allowed him to keep harming others. It’s about students who suffered in silence, and finally found the courage to speak out.
