Just weeks ago, Ronaldo and Jota were seen together celebrating Portugal’s Nations League victory. The sudden loss has left Ronaldo and the football world heartbroken.

Ronaldo wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team. You had just gotten married. I send my condolences and strength to your wife, children, and family. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We’ll miss you.”

Spanish police confirmed that the accident happened in the early hours of the morning in the Zamora region of northern Spain. Their car went off the road and caught fire.

Jota, who was 28, joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. He won three major trophies with the club, including the Premier League title last season. Just weeks before the accident, he had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, and had posted, “Yes to forever” on social media.

Liverpool Football Club released a statement saying:
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. He passed away in a car accident in Spain, along with his brother Andre. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of their family and loved ones at this very difficult time. The club will continue to support them fully.”

Jota had a successful football career. He played for clubs like Atletico Madrid and Porto before moving to England to join Wolves in 2017. In 2020, he transferred to Liverpool for £45 million. He quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 65 goals and helping the team win the League Cup and FA Cup in the 2021/22 season.

The football world is mourning the loss of a talented player and a beloved teammate.
