A tragic accident took place on Wednesday morning when part of the Gambhira Bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Vadodara district. The incident happened around 7:30 AM, when a truck, a van, and a car were crossing the bridge. Suddenly, a section of the bridge gave way, and all three vehicles fell into the Mahisagar River.

Locals nearby immediately rushed to help and called emergency services. Police, fire brigade, and disaster response teams quickly arrived and started rescue operations. So far, 13 people have been confirmed dead, and several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

A fire brigade official said, “A portion of the bridge collapsed suddenly. Three vehicles fell into the river. We have started rescue work and already pulled out 10 people.”

The bridge is located about 25 km from Vadodara city and is an important route for transport vehicles going to Saurashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently abroad, spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to get updates. He expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The PM’s office announced financial help:

  • ₹2 lakh each for the families of those who died
  • ₹50,000 for each injured person from the PM’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF)

Meanwhile, the Gujarat Congress has blamed the state government for the collapse and criticized its handling of infrastructure safety.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as efforts continue to pull the remaining vehicle from the river.
