Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post as the Vice President of India. He stepped down on Monday, citing health issues and medical advice. His resignation came just hours after he chaired the first Monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Union Cabinet. He said he was proud to contribute to India’s progress as a global and economic power.

Who is Jagdeep Dhankhar?
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. He studied B.Sc. (Honours) in Physics from Maharaja’s College, Jaipur, and later earned his law degree (LLB) from the University of Rajasthan.
He started his legal career in 1979 and was made a Senior Advocate in 1990 by the Rajasthan High Court. He practiced mainly in the Supreme Court, handling cases related to steel, coal, mining, and international business disputes.
Over the years, he appeared in many High Courts and was the senior-most lawyer in Rajasthan before becoming the Governor of West Bengal in July 2019. He held that post until July 2022.
His Political Career
Dhankhar entered politics in 1989 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu. He served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs under Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar from 1990 to 1991.
In 1993, he was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh (Ajmer). During his political journey, he served on several important committees in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajasthan Assembly. He also represented India in the European Parliament as a Deputy Leader of a parliamentary delegation.

Other Interests and Achievements
Outside of politics and law, Dhankhar has a passion for sports. He was the President of the Rajasthan Olympic Association and the Rajasthan Tennis Association.
He is a life member of the Indian Law Institute and is also part of several arbitration councils, including the Indian Council of Arbitration and international bodies like the ICC Court of Arbitration.
As Vice President, he was the ex-officio Chancellor of Delhi University and Panjab University.
Jagdeep Dhankhar is married to Dr. Sudesh Dhankhar, and they have one daughter, Kamna.
