In a major boost to private vehicle owners, the Indian government will launch a FASTag-based annual car pass from August 15, 2025. Priced at just ₹3,000, this new pass is designed to make highway travel smoother, faster, and cheaper.

This scheme applies only to private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans — not for commercial vehicles.

What’s the Deal?

The FASTag-based annual car pass will be valid for one year from activation or up to 200 highway trips, whichever comes first. So, if you’re someone who hits the road often, this is a serious win.

You’ll be able to activate and renew the pass via the Rajmarg Yatra app or directly through the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH.

Why This Matters

Let’s be real — toll plazas can be a pain. Long queues, confusion over payments, and repeated stops can turn any road trip into a drag.

This annual pass aims to cut the chaos by giving private car owners a one-time payment option that covers multiple trips. That means:

  • Less waiting
  • Fewer arguments
  • No repeat payments
  • Full digital control

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari called it a “transformative step” for Indian road travel. And honestly, it is.

Highway Stats That’ll Blow Your Mind

Till December 2024, over 10.1 crore FASTags had been issued. The average daily collection from FASTag tolls was a whopping ₹193 crore in November 2024, according to MoRTH’s official report.

That’s a sign — digital tolling is now the norm. This annual pass is simply the next logical step.

What About the 60 km Toll Issue?

This move also responds to an old frustration — multiple toll plazas popping up within a 60 km stretch. Now, with the annual pass, those short-gap charges won’t feel like you’re being nickel-and-dimed every few kilometres.

A Nudge Towards Smarter Roads

Let’s face it — India’s roads are growing, and so should our systems. This new pass will make toll payment a background task, not a travel headache.

It’s not just about saving money. It’s about saving time, stress, and effort.

The FASTag-based annual car pass is the kind of common-sense solution we’ve been waiting for. Affordable, digital-first, and super convenient — it’s one more reason to love hitting the open road.
