Ukraine’s bold incursion into Russia’s Kursk region left many questioning: Was the high cost in lives and resources worth the strategic gain?
Was it worth it? This question lingers in the hearts of many Ukrainians as they reflect on the recent Kursk offensive. The operation, which began in August 2024, was a bold move by Ukraine to reclaim territory and pressure Russia. However, the human cost has left many questioning its value.
A Friend Lost in Battle
Marlia Pankova, 25, last heard from her close friend Pavlo Humeniuk in December. Pavlo, a 24-year-old combat engineer, went missing during the fighting near Novoivanivka in Kursk. Months have passed, and there’s still no news of his fate. Marlia spends her days searching social media, hoping for answers.
“I’m just not sure it was worth it,” she says, tears streaming down her face. Pavlo and Marlia shared a love for hiking in Ukraine’s mountains, a bond that now feels like a distant memory.

The Strategic Gamble
Ukraine’s assault on Kursk took the world by surprise. It was the largest attack on Russian soil since World War II. Initially, Ukrainian forces seized over 1,376 square kilometers of territory. However, logistical challenges and a lack of troops soon turned the tide.
“From the very beginning, logistics was seriously complicated,” said Serhiy Rakhmanin, a Ukrainian lawmaker. Russia’s superior manpower and reinforcements, including elite units and North Korean forces, made it difficult for Ukraine to hold its ground.
As Ukraine retreated from Kursk, public opinion became divided. Some, like soldier Oleksii Deshevyi, who lost his hand in the fighting, question the operation’s logic. “We should not have started this at all,” he said.
Despite the setbacks, Ukraine’s General Staff claims the operation achieved its goals, diverting Russian forces and capturing nearly 1,000 prisoners. Yet, the emotional toll on families like Marlia’s remains heavy.
Looking Ahead
As U.S. President Donald Trump negotiates with Russia to end the war, many Ukrainians fear the cost of peace. Marlia, considering joining the armed forces, reflects on the sacrifices made. “Every time someone tries to sell a piece of Ukraine, they should remember what we’ve already given,” she says.
The Kursk offensive may have been a risky gamble, but it also showcased Ukraine’s resilience. As the conflict continues, the question remains: Was it worth it?
