China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, has urged the U.S. to find common ground with China and work towards peaceful relations. However, he also warned that China is prepared to take action if necessary as the trade war continues to escalate.
Speaking at an event in Washington on Saturday, Xie shared his concerns about the impact of tariffs, which he said could harm the global economy. He compared the situation to the Great Depression, which also followed tariffs imposed by the U.S. in 1930.
Xie used the idea of balancing opposing forces, like yin and yang in traditional Chinese medicine, to explain how China believes both nations can peacefully coexist. “Just like in traditional medicine, where different ingredients work together for the best results, China and the U.S. can also work together,” Xie said. He added that the world is big enough for both countries to succeed without fighting each other.

The ongoing trade war has nearly stopped trade between China and the U.S., with tariffs above 100% on goods in both directions. This has also led to restrictions on trade, investments, and cultural exchanges.
China’s top shipbuilding group recently criticized a U.S. plan to charge fees on ships linked to China. While other countries like Japan and Taiwan are already negotiating with the U.S. over new tariffs, there are no current talks planned between China and the U.S.
U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that the U.S. is having “good conversations” with China privately, though he didn’t provide further details. China has said that any talks would need the U.S. to show respect first.
Xie emphasized that China opposes the trade war and will retaliate against any country that imposes tariffs on it.
