Kunal Kamra Row: Yogi Adityanath on Freedom of Expression

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has spoken about the controversy involving comedian Kunal Kamra. He said that while freedom of expression is important, it should not be used to personally attack others. Speaking on a podcast with journalist Smita Prakash, Adityanath also criticized some people for misusing this right to create divisions in the country.

During the podcast, the BJP leader also accused the Congress of using money from billionaire George Soros to influence last year’s Lok Sabha elections. He also criticized Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar for allegedly suggesting changes to the Constitution to provide reservations for Muslims.

What Happened in the Kunal Kamra Controversy?

Comedian Kunal Kamra recently sparked a huge controversy during his show at Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s ‘The UniContinental.’ He performed a parody of the song Bholi Si Surat to mock Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, calling him a ‘gaddar’ (traitor). This was in reference to Shinde’s rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022, which led to the fall of the Shiv Sena government.

Aftermath of Kamra’s Show

After the video of Kamra’s performance went viral, angry Shiv Sena workers vandalized the venue. Following this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished a part of the club, and the venue was temporarily shut down.

On Monday, Kamra responded to the incident, refusing to apologize for his remarks. He defended the venue, saying it had nothing to do with his content. He also compared the attack to overturning a truck carrying tomatoes just because someone disliked their butter chicken.

Kamra further stated that he does not fear the mob and is ready to cooperate with the police and courts.

Reactions from Political Parties

Members of the ruling Mahayuti alliance have strongly criticized Kamra’s remarks. However, the opposition, including Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), has defended him. Thackeray said that Kamra only spoke the truth and that “a traitor will be called a traitor.”
